Derrick John is an artist whose music is rooted in raw honesty, self-reflection, and emotional evolution. Born and raised in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, his journey with music began at just 12 years old: experimenting with remixes on Audacity, recording on a rock band microphone, and turning childhood moments with his sister into the earliest sparks of creativity. What started as playful expression quickly became something deeper. Music has been a lifelong outlet for processing thoughts, emotions, and the complexities of his inner world.

For over 17 years, Derrick has consistently written lyrics, using music as a daily practice of self-discovery and clarity. His work captures real-time reflections of his life, aimed to be unfiltered, introspective, and deeply human. Outside of music, he works supervising maintenance crews for a landscaping company, grounding his passion in discipline and hard work.

In January 2021, Derrick made a life-altering decision to leave everything behind and move to Denver, Colorado with nothing but a gym bag, leaving the keys to his car in the hands of a stranger at the Chicago airport. It was an act of faith in himself and his future. After years of adjustment and growth, he found his rhythm and fully committed to his path in March 2024.

His debut project, Unspoken, marks a pivotal moment in that journey. More than just an album, it represents years of internal transformation, vulnerability, and the courage to share his truth. Created as a therapeutic release rather than a commercial pursuit, Derrick actively cherishes the effort from everyone involved in the project, “Many shout outs are to come for those who graciously, and truly, gave an artistic element to this project. I have seen proof beyond doubt creating this, that there are beautiful souls in every crevice of the universe. An entire village of amazingly talented individuals all over the world contributed to this, implementing their ideas and vision amplifying the energy of this album.”
